The Natural Gas Technology used by Mercedes-Benz is a BlueEFFICIENCY technology with extremely low exhaust emissions which is based on two different fuels. The bifuel design of this drive system reflects our aim of achieving the greatest possible practical usability. The driver is able to switch from natural gas to petrol operation and vice versa at the touch of a button. This bifuel operation makes the NGT drive system eminently suitable for applications consisting of both journeys in inner-city areas and inter-urban assignments. Because if there happens to be no source of natural gas immediately available, the van can continue to operate on petrol. NGT operation is able to relieve the environmental burden in inner cities and recreational areas, as it emits almost no particulates.
It is in an urban environment that the monovalent Sprinter NGT [1] is of particular benefit. The petrol required for starting off and as emergency reserve is contained in a fuel tank of reduced dimensions (< 15 l). Switch-over is automatic and cannot be influenced by the driver.
The monovalent Sprinter NGT already today complies with the stringent EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) exhaust gas standards.
