The radical design concept for this dynamic supercar with front-mounted mid-engine (in a low position behind the front axle) is characterised by the vehicle’s proportions and the optimised lightweight body construction. This is the first car launched by Mercedes-Benz and AMG to feature an aluminium chassis and body.
This generates a significant weight saving compared with the traditional steel construction – as demonstrated by the target DIN unladen weight of 1620 kg (without driver).
The new bodyshell comprises an aluminium space frame. This exclusive design combines intelligent lightweight construction with outstanding rigidity, which allows for uncompromisingly dynamic handling. It goes without saying that the aluminium space frame meets all passive safety and body quality requirements specified for a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle. And despite the low seating position typical of all sports cars, the gullwing doors make entering and exiting the SLS AMG particularly comfortable.
